It is our experience that water satisfaction is directly related to clarity and chlorine levels. Below you will find several solutions we employ to give our customers the best bang for their buck and the latest in technological pool advances.

Proper Pool Sanitation & Filtration

What you need to know

From the CDC website – “There is no evidence that COVID-19 can be spread to humans through the use of pools, hot tubs or spas, or water playgrounds. Proper operation, maintenance, and disinfection (with chlorine or bromine ) of pools, hot tubs or spas and water playgrounds should inactivate the virus that causes COVID-19.”

Proper water operation, maintenance and disinfection is vitally important in ensure that you and your family can use your pool in a safe environment. To meet the CDC’s recommendation, the following three facets are of equal importance and only when combined, ensure a safe pool environment.

Proper water operation:

Does your pool have the proper turnover rate? The time it takes for all of your pool water to entirely cycle through your filter and sanitation system. A commercial pool is mandated to turnover every 6 hours.

Proper water maintenance:

Is your pool water properly balanced – pH – Alkalinity – Calcium Hardness – Water Temperature – Dissolved Solids – all need to be checked at regular intervals of a minimum of once a week.

Proper Disinfection:

To disinfect water means it must be sanitized. Making sure your chlorine and bromine are at free active levels in the water is most important. In order to achieve this, you will need to rely on UV, ozone or mineral purifiers which can help ensure your chlorine is free and active to disinfect, e.g. oxidize the water. The most effective oxidizer technology available combines UV and ozone to produce hydroxyl radicals.

What you can do:
  • Have your turnover rate assessed by a professional. They can determine if your pump, filter and plumbing are set up properly for you.

  • Participate in an orientation on proper pool maintenance and water chemistry.

  • Obtain a professional inspection of your chemical feeders to make sure they are working properly.

  • Upgrade to a variable speed pump that can help you set your turnover rate.

  • Change your sand, DE or cartridge filters to new media.

  • Install a UV system, an ozone system or a combination of both to introduce hydroxyl radicals into your water.

More about Free Radicals

  • The Combination of UV and O3 creates hydroxyl radicals – AOP (Advanced Oxidation Process)

  • Hydroxyl radicals inactivate harmful microorganisms and oxidize inorganic waste products

  • Hydroxyl radicals are the most powerful advanced sanitizer and oxidation agent available

  • Effective against a broader range of organisms than chlorine

  • Capable of destroying 99.9% of dangerous contaminants and microorganisms

  • Safer disinfection process without the use of harmful chemicals

  • Does not affect taste, odor or color of the water

  • Environmentally friendly, family friendly and produces no harmful by-products

  • UV and ozone can reduce chemical usage by 75%

  • Minimizes your exposure to potentially harmful chloramines and other chemical contaminants

  • The oxidation process between contaminants and hydroxyl radicals happen almost instantaneously

How UV Light Works

Source: Pool & Spa News – Shining a Light on UV Pool & Spa News – Shining a Light on UV UV sanitation systems eliminate chlorine-resistant microorganisms, which are common causes of pool closures. These systems reproduce UV radiation inside light chambers via powerful lamps, which emit germicidal UV-C light that is used to disinfect pool and spa water. Facilities equipped with these systems consume fewer chemicals and allow sanitizers to be more effective. How much more effective depends on the water’s hardness, pH and other water chemistry factors. UV-C causes permanent damage to a number of microorganisms almost instantly as the water circulates through the light chamber. By disrupting the microorganism’s DNA, protozoans, viruses and bacteria are unable to replicate and remain inert. This light, however, works only on water that flows through the chamber. Water in dead zones isn’t treated by the light and the light does not act as a residual, thus the need for the presence of a halogen. The effects of UV-C are immediate and do not alter the water’s composition.

Natural Chemistry's Line of Natural Enzyme Products

What are enzyme based chemicals?

Natural enzymes work by biodegrading the non-living organics in pools, breaking them down to their original building blocks, such as carbon dioxide and water, which are essentially reabsorbed back into the pool or spa water.

What is non-living organic matter?

Here is a brief list of non-living organic matter that can be found in your pool that your chlorine deals with on a daily basis.

  • Bird Droppings

  • Personal Hygiene Products (lotions, deodorant, hair products)

  • Vegetation

  • Human Waste

  • Tree Sap

  • Sweat

  • Jet Fuel (surprising right?)

How do enzymes help sanitize my water?

Enzyme’s essentially act as a supplement to your chlorine. While chlorine is highly effective at breaking down organic living matter, it is not very effective at breaking down non-living organic matter. Chlorine’s efficiency dramatically drops when dealing with non-organic living matter which requires a higher chlorine reading than actually required to sanitize the pool. By introducing natural enzymes that are specifically formulated to destroy non-living organic matter, your pool can maintain a lower chlorine reading since it’s not being wasted on non-living organic matter.

Variable Speed Pumps

How do variable speed pumps differ from traditional single speed pumps? Single speed pumps are your traditional pool pump. They are loud and inefficient but cheap. They run at one speed and must be able to handle any range of circulation requirements within the motors specifications. There is no flexibility and can cost a home owner upwards of $2,000 a year to run.

Variable speed pumps use what is called a “permanent magnet motor” unlike the single speeds that use the traditional and inefficient induction motors. Magnet motors are also found in the latest electric cars. Variable speed pumps can be dialed in so that you can get the most efficient turnover rate at the optimal speed for the greatest energy savings. This allows the pump to slow down the flow of water thus resulting in less friction which increases the efficiency of the entire circulation system. Furthermore, when you slow the movement of the water, it will allow your filter media to sift more effectively since it spends more time in the filter.

Winter covers (a.k.a. Safety Covers) are a necessity for the winter months and an integral part of ensuring your pool does not become a safety hazard during the winter months. Not only does the winter cover prevent unwanted debris from entering the pool, it protects your family and pets from injury.

Signs that You May Need a New Winter Cover:
  • Visible wear along coping where the winter cover touches.

  • Dry Rot – You can actually hear the cover crunch when you apply pressure to it.

  • Visible Holes – Compromises the safety a winter cover provides where small holes can turn into large tears.

Services Provided:
  • Advise on whether you need to replace the cover and inform you of your options.

  • We will measure the perimeter or pick up your cover for a duplicate replacement.

  • We will reinstall your new winter cover per the manufacturer’s recommendations. If you have an existing cover, we can have duplicates made so no new drilling is required.

  • We work with several manufacturers to ensure we have the correct safety cover to meet your needs. Our office can be reached at (847) 907-4995 or email us at info@quantuspools.com.
