POOL SANITATION & FILTRATION

What You Need to Know

From the CDC website – “There is no evidence that COVID-19 can be spread to humans through the use of pools, hot tubs or spas, or water playgrounds. Proper operation, maintenance and disinfection (e.g. with chlorine or bromine) of pools, hot tubs or spas and water playgrounds should inactivate the virus that causes COVID-19.”

Proper water operation, maintenance and disinfection is vitally important to ensure that you and your family can use your pool in a safe environment. To meet the CDC’s recommendation, the following three facets are of equal importance and only when combined, ensure a safe pool environment.

Proper Water Operation

Does your pool have the proper turnover rate? The time it takes for all your pool water to entirely cycle through your filter and sanitation system. A commercial pool is mandated to turnover every 6 hours.

Proper Water Maintenance

Is your Pool water properly balanced – pH – Alkalinity – Calcium Hardness – Water Temperature – Dissolved Solids all need to be checked at regular intervals of a minimum of once a week.

Proper Disinfection

To disinfect your water means it must be sanitized. Making sure your chlorine and bromine are at free active levels in the water is most important. In order to achieve this, you will need to rely on UV, ozone or mineral purifiers which can help ensure your chlorine is free and active to disinfect, i.e. oxidize the water. The most effective oxidizer technology available combines UV and ozone to produce hydroxyl radicals.

What You Can Do
  • Have your turnover rate assessed by a professional. They can determine if your pump, filter and plumbing are set up properly for you.

  • Participate in an orientation on proper pool maintenance and water chemistry.

  • Obtain professional inspection of your chemical feeders to make sure they are working properly.

  • Upgrade to a variable speed pump that can help you set your turnover rate.

  • Change your sand, DE or cartridge filters to new media.

    • Old filter media can slow down your turnover rate.

  • Install a UV system, an ozone system or a combination of both to introduce hydroxyl radicals into your pool water.

More about Free Radicals
  • The Combination of UV and O3 creates Hydroxyl Radicals – AOP (Advanced Oxidation Process)

  • Hydroxyl radicals inactivate harmful microorganisms and oxidize inorganic waste products.

  • Hydroxyl radicals are a powerful oxidizer.

  • The most powerful advanced sanitizer and oxidation agent available.

  • Effective against a broader range of organisms than chlorine.

  • Capable of destroying 99.9% of dangerous contaminants and microorganisms.

  • Safer disinfection process without the use of harmful chemicals.

  • Does not affect taste, odor and color of the water.

  • Environmentally friendly, family friendly and produces no harmful by-products.

  • UV and ozone can reduce chemical usage by 75%.

  • Minimizes your exposure to potentially harmful chloramines and other chemical contaminants.

  • The oxidation process between contaminants and hydroxyl radicals happen almost instantaneously.
